Ian Hanger was called to the Bar in 1968 and became a QC in 1984. After a career in litigation he began mediating in 1990. Since that time he has mediated more than 2000 matters. They include public nuisance disputes, commercial disputes of all kinds, professional negligence, class actions, employment, partnership, insolvency and personal injuries. He one of the most respected mediators in Australia.
He is an Adjunct Professor in the Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies within the University of Queensland, a member of the mediation panel of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, a member of the mediation panel for the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes and has given papers on mediation in USA, England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Italy, Croatia, Australia, Hong Kong and New Guinea. He has been consulted by judges on ADR practice from China, Hong Kong, Japan and New Guinea.
He is a member of the National ADR Advisory Committee to the Federal Attorney-General in Australia and a member of the Law Council of Australia's ADR Subcommittee, as well as being Chairman of the Queensland Bar Association's ADR Committee.
In 2007 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to ADR and to music. In 2008 and 2009 he was listed by the Australian Financial Review as one of the top ADR practitioners in Australia.
In 2009 he was made a Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators and awarded Fellowship as an Eminent Professional by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors in London.
Background
Ian has been married to Dr Maria Hanger since 1973. They have one daughter, Belinda. He is actively involved in music in Australia and Chairman of the largest national piano competition in Australia.
