James A. Readey, formerly a partner in the firm of Bricker & Eckler in Columbus, Ohio, and now the owner of the mediation firm of READEY MEDIATION, LLC, has been concentrating his practice in alternative dispute resolution since 1993.
Since that time, Mr. Readey has served as a mediator in the areas of insurance, personal injury, medical malpractice, professional negligence, land use, construction, employment and workplace conflicts, as well as commercial litigation. His combined career as a mediator and a trial lawyer spans 38 years.
Mr. Readey has had a long-standing interest in and has been an activist for the alternative dispute resolution movement beginning in the 1980's. While serving as President of the Columbus Bar Association in 1985-1986, he initiated a task force for a local Neighborhood Justice Center modeled after the multi-door courthouse concept, and that initiative now operates as Community Mediation Services of Central Ohio.
He also originated and helped to start the program of Settlement Weeks in the local courts which has grown as a nationally recognized legitimate tool for alternative dispute resolution.
He was the primary author of the original court-annexed arbitration program in the state courts in Columbus. Mr. Readey was the first Chairman of the Ohio State Bar Association's Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution. He helped conceive and then served as Director of the National Pre-Suit Mediation Program for over three years.
He has written numerous articles on the legal profession and alternative dispute resolution and frequently serves as a lecturer locally and nationally at seminars and workshops on a variety of dispute resolution topics.
He has mediated more than 1,800 matters. In addition to his experience as a mediator, he has extensive experience as an arbitrator. He is currently a Fellow with the IAM, the President-Elect, and serves on the Board of Governors. In addition, he is listed as an "Ohio Super Lawyer" and in "The Best Lawyers in America" for preeminence in his field as a mediator and arbitrator. In 2006 he was awarded the Columbus Bar Association's Professionlism Award.
