Max Factor III is a Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators, President-Elect of the Southern California Mediation Association, and has served for the past 15 years as Chairman, Real Estate Committee, Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. Max is the ADR representative on the California State Bar Committee on the Administration of Justice.

IAM Member since 2004

Background

Each year Max successfully mediates more than 100 civil (and not-so-civil) lawsuits. His mediation practice specializes in cases involving:
  • Consumer Torts
  • Unfair Business Practices
  • Professional Malpractice
  • Intellectual Property
  • Employment & Workplace Claims
  • Partnership Dissolution
  • Construction Defects
  • Real Estate Sales, Leasing & Development
Max has been a full-time neutral since 1999, after a legal career of more than three decades. He spent his first nine years as an attorney in public service, with the California Law Center and then as a Los Angeles Deputy City Attorney. This was followed by 22 years in private practice, successfully negotiating with companies such as: Ryder Systems, Hughes Aircraft, Coldwell Banker, Irvine Company (real estate), Polaroid, Pacific Theatres, Gucci America, Credit Lyonnaia (corporate), Scudder Investments, Flying Tiger, Kayser Roth, Hilton Hotels, and Xerox (employment). As a mediator, Max works closely with legal counsel to craft solutions that will satisfy the important interests of the litigants and of their counsel. “Mediation gives me the opportunity to use my legal and business experience, along with my energy and persistence, to become a catalyst for converting contentious business disputes into mutually acceptable and workable agreements,” he says. Max is married to Dr. E. Jane Arnault and they share three daughters: Ami, Jenny and Lauren. He is a fan of the Dodgers and USC Basketball, and greatly enjoys drama (at the theater, that is) and weekend hiking.

Education/Training

Graduating magna cum laude in Economics from Harvard in1966, Max went on for his J.D. at Yale (1969) where he was on the Board of Editors of the Yale Law Journal (1967-69). Immediately thereafter, he spent two years as Law Clerk for the Hon. Anthony J. Celebrezze, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
