Michael D. Young, an intellectual property and employment litigator and mediator with the national firm Alston + Bird, has been mediating cases since 1989. Building off of his extensive employment and intellectual property litigation experience, and his training through the nationally acclaimed Straus Institute of Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine Law School, Mr. Young assists parties resolve contentious and complex civil disputes, often in creative and innovative ways that the parties themselves had not previously considered.
Mr. Young has extensive experience both litigating and mediating all varieties of employment and intellectual property disputes, including wrongful termination, harassment, discrimination, disability, public policy, wage and hour, and misclassification on the employment side; and trade secrets, trademarks, copyrights, patents, and restrictive covenants on the IP side. Mr. Young has been recognized by his peers as a Super Lawyer in Intellectual Property and Employment Law since 2005. In addition, in his 20-plus year legal career, Mr. Young has mediated, litigated, and tried hundreds of disputes involving unfair competition, antitrust, and environmental issues (including CERCLA and RCRA cases), among other complex business disputes. He has further successfully managed and resolved large multi-party and multi-interest disputes involving public entities, and larger public policy issues.
Mr. Young is renowned for his tireless dedication to the settlement process, as well as for his creative approaches to dispute resolution. He is further a nationally recognized expert on mediation, including mediation ethics and mediation confidentiality, and has been featured on national television as the legal commentator analyzing the surprise jailing of mediation participant Joe Francis of Girls Gone Wild notoriety.
Exemplifying his dedication to the dispute resolution community, Mr. Young has been an adjunct professor of law in Negotiation and ADR processes at the University of Southern California Law School, a position he has held since 1998; a member of the California State Bars Standing Committee on ADR; and a Distinguished Fellow and executive officer with the renowned International Academy of Mediators. Mr. Young remains very active in the dispute resolution community, speaking publicly, serving on State and Bar ADR Committees, and publishing on the use of ADR in the resolution of complex disputes.
