IAM Fellow Marvin E. Johnson was presented with the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution's (CPR Institute) first-ever "Award for Outstanding Contribution to Diversity in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) on January 15, 2009 at the CPR Annual Meeting in New York. According to Kathleen Bryan, President & CEO of the CPR Institute, Marvin Johnson has shown leadership and demonstrated extraordinary commitment to supporting, mentoring, training, and leading others to promote the use of diverse mediators and arbitrators.

IAM Fellow, Thomas J. Stipanowich recipient of the D'Alemberte/Raven award
IAM Fellow, Thomas J. Stipanowich, academic director of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law has been named the American Bar Association's recipient of the D'Alemberte/Raven award. The award recognizes members of the dispute resolution community who have "contributed significantly to the field by developing new or innovative programs, improvements in service and efficiency, research and writings in the area of dispute resolution or continuing education programs."

Fellow Ben Picker accepted the CPR Institute's "Inaugural Law Firm Award for Excellence in ADR"
Fellow Ben Picker accepted the CPR Institute's "Inaugural Law Firm Award for Excellence in ADR" on behalf of his firm, Stradley Ronon, at CPR's meeting in Boston on October 25, 2007. CPR's Award Committee, comprised of corporate counsel from Microsoft, General Electric, Johnson & Johnson, Northrop Grumman, Abbott Labs and DuPont as well as representatives from law schools, made the award in recognition of the firm's mediation training programs, dissemination of scholarly information on ADR and development of innovative ADR practice tools and conflict management systems. Ben Picker, chair of the firm's 12 lawyer ADR Practice Group, in his acceptance remarks, addressed the challenges and opportunities for law firms seeking to make a substantial firm-wide commitment to ADR

Minnesota State Bar Association ADR Section Honors Two IAM Fellows
n October 18, 2007, on the occasion of its 10th annual ADR Institute, the Minnesota State Bar Association's ADR Section honored ten individuals who it determined had contributed the most to the development and expansion of ADR in the state of Minnesota over the last 25 years. Two of the 10 awardees were the two Minnesotans who are Fellows of the IAM, Michael Landrum and Gary Weissman.

IAM Member Mark Welge Remembered
It is with extreme sadness that the IAM acknowledges the passing of our member Mark Welge on January 9th, following a courageous battle with cancer. Mark was an outstanding mediator and human being. His commitment to the profession of mediation was tremendous. Mark's atiittude in his closing weeks, his relationship with his family, his continuing concern about others were inspirational. We will all miss him.

IAM Fellow Jeff Krivis Honored at CPR Awards Program
Fellow Jeff Krivis was honoured at the 24th Annual CPR Awards Program at a dinner held at New York's Jumeirah EssexHouse on January 20th.. The CPR Awards Program honors outstanding use and scholarship in the field of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). At the Awards Program, Jeff Krivis was presented with the Book Prize for his book IMPROVISATIONAL NEGOTIATION: A MEDIATOR'S STORIES OF CONFLICT ABOUT LOVE, MONEY, ANGER - AND THE STRATEGIESTHAT RESOLVED THEM (Jossey-Bass, San Francisco, 2006), (see attached for complete Press Release).

IAM Member Lynn Bassis Named 'SuperLawyer' in ADR
Lynne Bassis has been named "SuperLawyer" in the field of ADR for 2007, an honor bestowed upon 5% of southern California lawyers. The selection process includes nominations from all lawyers who are in practice for more than five years, an in-depth research process that scores and ranks nominees and a final election of the SuperLawyers by a blue ribbon panel comprised of 300-400 lawyers in southern California.

Tommy Proctor Wins President-Elect of Houston Bar Association
Tommy Proctor won the contested race for President-Elect of the Houston Bar Association. The HBA is an 11,800 member voluntary bar association, the fifth largest voluntary bar in the U.S. He will serve as president-elect from May '06-'07, and President from May '07-'08.

Stefan Mason Appointed Adjunct Professor at Pepperdine
Stefan Mason has been appointed Adjunct Professor of Law at the Pepperdine University School of Law’s Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution. He will be teaching a course entitled “Select Issues in Employment Mediation” commencing January 8, 2007 to upper division students at the Malibu campus.

IAM Fellow Robert Creo Teaches Mediation Techniques to International Litigators
“I was in Singapore for a World Intellectual Property Organization conference in order to receive training on how to handle international disputes, when I realized I was attending a conference full of people who would be familiar with successful U.S. mediators,” Powell said. “I wanted to have a U.S. mediation experience during my March break, so I began asking people at the conference who I should contact.” “Bob Creo’s name was recommended to me. I sent him the details of my program and asked if he would allow me to shadow him, so that I could get some practical experience in mediation. Bob didn’t hesitate for a second and told me to ‘come right over.’” Creo did more than just tell Powell to “come right over.”

David W. Plant Will Receive 2006 Lawyer as Problem Solver Award
The Section of Dispute Resolution of the ABA will present the 2006 Lawyer as Problem Solver Award to David W. Plant of New London, N. H., for his service as a seasoned litigator and model mediator, arbitrator and teacher. The awards are presented each year to a member of the legal profession who has exhibited extraordinary skill in either promoting the concept of the lawyer as problem-solver or resolving individual, institutional, community, state, national or international problems. Recipients are acknowledged for their use or promotion of collaboration, negotiation, mediation, counseling, decision-making and problem-solving skills to help parties resolve a problem in a creative and novel way. The Lawyer as Problem Solver Awards will be presented at a joint reception, “Beyond Borders,” at the ABA Annual Meeting in Hawaii on Aug. 4.

Bruce Myerson's Law School Team Wins
Bruce Meyerson coached the law school team that won the America Bar Association Mediation Advocacy Competition in Atlanta. His school won the regional competition that allowed it to advance to the Atlanta national competition. Several IAM members acted as judges and/or mediators for the event. Bruce's team won it overall. Last year, Michele Obradovic's team won the national competition. So, IAM stands proud in the event.
