Welcome to West Coast Stories: A 21st Century ‘Junto’ for Commercial Mediators
presented by The International Academy of Mediators and The Straus Institute of Dispute Resolution of Pepperdine University
In the 1961 American musical West Side Story, the age-old ethnic rivalry between two bitter street gangs was only bridged when a pair of teenage members from rival gangs fell desperately and deeply in love, and the groups ended up changing the narrative to accommodate the times.
Welcome to Santa Monica, where we will share our own stories of love and rivalry, conflict and change. Santa Monica is an iconic destination with a rich and diverse cultural history. We hope that here you will find inspiration in Santa Monica’s sandy beaches, stunning architecture and creative arts culture here.
1From healthy beginnings including bike rides, fun runs, yoga and Tai Chi to Benjamin Franklin styled “Junto” discussion groups, IAM’s West Coast Stories is sure to offer each participant a front row seat with opportunities to listen and learn as well as to share your own greatest stories with fellow mediators. West Coast Stories capitalizes on the best that IAM and our partners at Pepperdine’s Straus Institute have to offer.
1Benjamin Franklin established a “club for mutual improvement” called a “Junto” in 1727. Also known as the Leather Apron Club, it’s purpose was to debate questions of morals, politics, and natural philosophy, and to exchange knowledge of business affairs. Essentially, it was a group of Franklin’s closest circle of friends—people of science, business, politics and the arts, gathering to provide structure for their mutual improvement. They met regularly for some 40 years. This IAM Conference will introduce the concept of small group dialogue for purposes of mutual improvement which will meet informally throughout the conference at the option of the delegates.
2In the shadows of Hollywood but at the forefront of thought leaders, we proudly debut the world’s first “PEPP” talks. Modeledon the famous TED talk series, these short, videotaped stories (presented live in Santa Monica) will undoubtedly live up to the name of PEPP in being Provocative, Educational, Powerful and Persuasive.
2 In conjunction with our strategic partners at Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University, we will unveil the world’s first PEPP Talks, modeled on world reknown “TED Talks” and designed to build a powerful speaker program and to seek out extraordinary voices from our membership and our community who have a unique story or an unusual perspective—and who can convey it in a dynamic way.
From beginning to end, we hope you will be entertained, educated and engaged as the IAM/Pepperdine’s West Coast Stories: A 21st Century Junto for Commercial Mediators unfolds...for a copy of the brochure click here!
