David Hoffman received the inaugural MBA Professor Frank E.A. Sander Award during Conflict Resolution Week
The MBA is proud to honor the memory and legacy of Frank Sander, a luminary in the field of conflict resolution, by bestowing its inaugural MBA Professor Frank E.A. Sander Award in Dispute Resolution to David A. Hoffman.
Professor Rogers being presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by Jerry Weiss, IAM Distinguished Fellow
|Nancy Rogers is a “Matriarch” of mediation as we know it today. She is presently the Michael Moritz Emeritus Chair of Alternative Dispute Resolution at The Ohio State University. Her early work in writing seminal texts and establishing the Dispute Resolution Section of the ABA, along with her tireless efforts in establishing the Uniform Mediation Act and her work in grass roots peace enterprises such as the Divided Community Project set her apart, in an unrivaled place in ADR history. Her teaching and leadership have resulted in a tremendous following and her impact has been immeasurable.

Alan M. Kanter named “2019 Lawyer of the Year – Arbitration” By “Best Lawyers in America”
On August 15, 2018 Alan M. Kanter, Distinguished Fellow, has been recognized by his peers in the 25th edition of Best Lawyers in America as a “Lawyer of the Year” in the field of Arbitration and a “Best Lawyer” in the fields of Arbitration and Mediation.
Distinguished Fellow and Past President, Marvin E. Johnson was honoured by the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR)
Tuesday, June 5th, Distinguished Fellow and Past President, Marvin E. Johnson was honoured by the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR), Greater New York Chapter (GNY). ACR GNY presented Marvin with their 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award for his ongoing commitment to the practice and support of Alternative Dispute Resolution in New York and worldwide.
Columbus Bar Association Bar Service Medal
On Thursday, June 14th, another past IAM President has been awarded a prestigious award. Jim Readey (President 2010-2011) was awarded the Columbus Bar Association Bar Service Medal for distinguished service to the Bar.

I am pleased to advise that Distinguished Fellow Louise Otis (Montreal, Canada) received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from University of Ottawa at the end of June.
Congratulations to Distinguished Fellow, Michel Kallipetis recently named by Who’s Who Legal Awards as Lawyer of the Year in the practice area of Mediation! This took place the 4th Annual Who's Who Legal awards ceremony. Over 200 practitioners joined us at Plaisterers' Hall in London to enjoy the acclaim of their peers and clients. JAMS International was named Firm of the Year.
The Sid Lezak Award of Excellence is conferred upon an individual who in the eyes of the IAM best represents the furtherance of mediation as a preferred method of dispute resolution and peacekeeping, and to one who uses his or her personal and professional powers and persuasion to achieve this goal.

IAM Scholar In Residence Hal Abramson received the prestigious Best Professional Article Award from the CPR Institute (International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution) at CPR’s Annual Meeting in Miami on March 3, 2017. The CPR Award was presented to Professor Abramson by IAM Fellow Ben Picker, a member of CPR’s Advisory Council. The Article is entitled “Nelson Mandela AS Negotiator: What We Can Learn From Him”, published in the Ohio State Journal On Dispute Resolution.

Today, Southern California SuperLawyers came out, and our very own Denise Madigan was named one of the Top 50 Women Lawyers in Southern California! Believe it or not, there are over 50,000 women lawyers in Southern California. It is indeed a great honor for Denise to be named as one of the Top 50.

Eric Galton received the Justice Frank Evans Award from the Texas State Bar ADR Section in recognition of his excellence and life long contributions to the field of ADR. It was presented with Frank in attendance - Eric’s mentor-last week at the annual State Bar meeting in Austin. It is the highest Award given and long overdue.

Some of our members pioneered a state mediation movement. Fewer pioneered a movement in a country. Judge Alvarez created the mediation movement in a continent; she is the mother of mediation in South America. Gladys Stella Alvarez was a National Civil Judge from 1974 until 2005. In 2003, she received a doctorate in jurisprudence at the University of Buenos Aires; with her thesis on Mediation and Access to Justice (summa cum laude). The University of Windsor gave her an Honorary Doctorate in Civil Law, in recognition of her work in the field of Access to Justice and Mediation in June 2005. In 2010 she obtained a mediation license. She has been a recipient of CPR Institute and Mary Parker Follet Awards. She was part of the Hague’s Conference Experts Group in good practices in mediation of child abduction cases. Dr. Alvarez directs a post-graduate ADR degree at University of Buenos Aires and coordinates the Supreme Court Access to Justice Program.

Lawfuel, a prominent legal online publication in New Zealand has just released its list of mediation stars.
For the last 3 years, Geoff Sharp has been recognized by Who’s Who Legal as one of the 10 most highly regarded international mediators.
Deborah Clapshaw. Another to gain the honour of being a Distinguished Fellow by the IAM, Auckland barrister Ms Clapshaw was formerly a litigation lawyer both in New Zealand and Hong Kong.
With a construction and infrastructure specialization, gained both here and predominantly in London and Hong Kong, Auckland barrister and AMINZ President, John Walton mediates a wide range of commercial cases.
Lastly, an honourable mention must go to ex-pat New Zealander, Tony Willis.
Richard P. Sher, (St. Louis, Missouri) received the Richard S. Arnold Award for Distinguished Service at the recent Eighth Circuit Judicial Conference. The award recipients are chosen by the district judges in each of the districts in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, based on criteria for which Judge Arnold was known: "1) the person has achieved professional excellence in his or her field; 2) the person has been a leader in his or her legal community as reflected in the leadership positions the nominee has held in bar associations and other professional organizations; 3) the person has contributed significant work toward the delivery of volunteer legal services to underserved members of the community; 4) the person has been honored by his or her peers; and 5) the person has served as a mentor or role model for less-experienced lawyers or students interested in law." Mr. Sher, who has served as a mediator in more than 2,200 cases, was specifically recognized for his contribution to the study and acceptance of alternative dispute resolution in civil litigation.
Louise Otis (Montreal, Quebec) The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Québec, Mme Stéphanie Vallée, recently awarded the Prix de la justice du Québec 2015, to Mme Louise Otis. It is the highest distinction given in the legal field in Québec. The Prix de la justice du Québec 2015 recognizes and highlights the invaluable contribution of a person who has worked to defend the values of justice: accessibility, universality and quality.

The ADR Award of
Excellence recognizes exceptional contributions and/or achievements in
Alternative Dispute Resolution in two or more of the following areas:
Excellence in the practice of ADR; Participation in continuing legal
education at the OBA, Canadian Bar Association, Law Society of Upper
Canada or other organizations on ADR issues; Writing and teaching on ADR
issues; Mentoring of other persons in ADR; Participation in law reform
initiatives that touch upon ADR; and Promotion of the use of, and
generally providing leadership in ADR.
Jon also recently chaired the highly successful Winkler/IAM/Osgoode PD Conference which was held on May 12th in Toronto. This was the Third Annual Event and was entitled "The Unsettleable Case- Advanced Strategies for Senior Council and Mediators." IAM speakers at the CLE program included Pat Coughlan, Tracy Allen, Gene Moscovitch and George Brown (Keynote).
